From the Manufacturer
The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet 9100 with Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation while offering better visibility. With improved optics, the 3M Speedglas Auto Darkening Filter 9100XXi allows you to more readily recognize colors as compared to our other models. Welders will see a view that is less green. Colors, shades, tone as well as light and dark contrasts will all stand out with more vivid detail. Many welders will find they have better control of the weld puddle with a view that appears lighter, brighter and more realistic. This may help you focus on your welding set-up, welding technique, precision grinding, and inspection of completed welds.
Switch Between Welding and Grinding in just 2 to 3 Seconds — all with Your Gloves On
This helmet also comes with the 3M Speedglas Silver Front Panel 9100XXi, which offers the convenience of switching between welding mode and shade 3 grinding mode with a simple “gloves-on” touch of an external button on the silver front panel. There is no need to remove the helmet to change these settings. Memory modes allow accessing one of two pre-set welding modes. Both memory modes have an individual setting for dark shade, light to dark switching sensitivity and dark-to-light delay. An instant “Grab and Go” feature automatically turns the welding filter on to your most recent welding setting whenever you pick up the helmet. To save on power, it automatically shuts down after a period of inactivity.
Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 2.8 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (72 mm x 107 mm), the 9100XXi provides the largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an expansive field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction. Three arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 with a delay of approximately 40-250 milliseconds, allowing almost immediate inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld. Exhaust vents readily direct your exhaled air out of the helmet, helping to reduce heat, humidity and fogging of the welding filter.
The auto darkening filter can help reduce the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which boosts productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,000 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.

Helmet fitment is essential to the operation of a helmet during an impact. For the helmet to perform correctly during an impact, it must remain on the head.
Measuring the head is just a starting point for the entire sizing procedure.
A small metal tape measure or a cloth tape may be used to make your first measurement. You may also use a cord, which can subsequently be set against a measuring tape.
Take several measurements. The greatest measurement is the one you need to use.
